Learn About our Medical Marijuana Vaporizers:

Medical Marijuana

What is Medical Marijuana?

Medical marijuana refers to products derived from cannabis grown for palliative purposes. The cannabis plant contains a balance of chemicals (cannabinoids), including THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol) and CBD (Cannabidiol). THC produces psychoactive “euphoric” effects while CBD is thought to be non-psychoactive and to provide a range of palliative effects. Currently, medical marijuana products in New York State must be processed into a pure oil for the purposes of formulating a product with specific THC and CBD ratios to provide consistent dosage and benefits to patients.

Uses

Most uses of medical marijuana center on palliative treatment of chronic pain, nausea, and sleep deficiency in patients. Some medical programs also use medical marijuana to alleviate symptoms associated with strong medical treatments for serious diseases. There are numerous studies as to further medical applications for marijuana and marijuana-derived products, and a starting list can be found here. More recent articles can be found by executing searches in PubMed Central, and some recent reviews of research have been collected below.

Low-THC, High-CBD Products

Low-THC, High-CBD products have been shown to manage symptoms with limited impact on cognition, and can be used safely at any time of day. Studies published in the British Journal of Clinical Pharmacology (BJCP) have suggested that CBD may relieve symptoms of nausea and vomiting, severe muscle spasms, and inflammatory bowel disease. A review of research on the potential therapeutic benefits of CBD from the BJCP can be found here.

Balanced THC-CBD Products

Balanced THC-CBD products may effectively manage symptoms with a limited euphoric response, and can be used either in the morning or at night. Studies published in the American Society for Experimental NeuroTherapeutics (ASENT) suggest that cannabinoids (THC and CBD) may have the potential to mitigate neuropathic pain, as well as pain associated with cancer and cachexia. A review of research on cannabinoids as a possible treatment for neuropathic pain from ASENT can be found here.
